The Proposal

Hey all! I’m back with my first piece of flash fiction/romance. Enjoy!

The evening air was still fresh when he came out of his house wearing a silky, black coat with a matching pant and tie. His heart was heavy with suspense and dilemma, for he had no gift to present her with, save his words. Even his striking look wouldn’t bring the subject quite as forward as a bunch of roses,or better yet,a diamond ring, he thought. But he had not the time nor provision to purchase either of those.
Not that he was short on money. They were going to Neptune’s place, one of the most fabulous restaurants in town. While the night was young,he was gonna take her to the balcony, and when in solitude, get down on his knees, and propose to her under the full moon, sliding his slender fingers along her silky skin, relishing the look of exuberant amazement and finally kissing her red, rosy lips, having found his soulmate.
She would not hesitate in accepting the proposal, for at that very moment, this was all that she dreamt of. After having been together with him for more than 3 years, she yearned for more. Marriage was a prospect she wouldn’t refuse. And for that, she’d do anything.
The fated time arrived, and if my memory is right,he took her by her hand and walked out into the open, and stopped under a tree. I’m sure he
got that idea from the numerous romance stories he had thoroughly enjoyed reading. But she was excited, and when she noticed that he had not any present in his hand, she exclaimed, “Oh! You have not a gift, nor a ring for me! What indeed would you in mind?”
He fished out a piece of paper from his pocket and held it out. ‘Twas promptly snatched and eager eyes hungrily guzzled every word written in it, and at the end a squeak was heard. ” It’s a moon wrapped in brown paper?”
With a smile on his face, he replied, ” That, my dear, is you.” Her expression announced his victory. And with simple smiles they embraced each other under the grinning moon, as one casual observer watched from the shadows, whose heart glowed with contentment.

P.S: This has been penned for DVerse, where poets were asked to pen prosery including the line “It is a moon wrapped in brown paper”. I know I’ve ventured way beyond the word limit again, 😅 I do apologise for that! You can access the prompt at https://dversepoets.com/2022/02/14/prosery-valentine/
