Soup

My next haibun:

Although I mostly prefer writing poetry, when time and muse have permitted, I’ve also dabbled in the delightful art of story writing. It can be quite challenging, but as is the case with poems, if you’ve a well-cooked plot, it doesn’t take much to prepare a story.

I like to think of it as concocting a mouthwatering soup. The ingredients involve well brewed ideas, – which give me a clear picture of how the story starts, progresses and end- inspired imagination, and of course, lucid, expansive language. I cannot quite emphasize the latter’s importance, as expression decides the fate of the story. Also, good language gives additional flavour to the soup, seasoning it to perfection and adding the final touches. The plot acts as the base, which you can creatively customize.

But unlike preparing a real soup, I really love to play with the paraphernalia of ingredients and cutlery in my hands, for the story certainly turns out tasty in ways unimaginable for the dish (I’d really pity the taster)- whether it’s overdosed on spice, sweetness, salt or bitterness is immaterial- a recipe for disaster can create a delicacy with the appropriate language. So, to sum it all up, language is the key to a lip-smacking tale. Pour in the plot, mix in a little ingenuity and season it with the right words. Et viola, you’ve a succulent soup.

Mouthwatering soup
Offers flamboyant flavors
With the right dressing.
