Mid-Spring,or, Summer

Its quite pleasant weather in Chennai right now,and I am enjoying it a lot. Here,the climate is much less varied,as it is a coastal city, and we have the sea moderating our climate(I remember my geography!!!!),but you can tell the difference between December and May!

Major season(sekkei)- early spring(Uo kōri o izuru):
Its still kinda like midwinter in Chennai, but we would rather call it early spring. Temperatures aren’t particularly soaring,days are sunny and nights are quite cool. The air is fresh and flowers bloom wherever people bother growing them.

Micro season(ko)- early summer(Kawazu hajimete naku):
This is also kinda early summer,given the soaring temperatures,I actually sweat while playing basketball(or doing any exercise,for that matter) during the day!!Then again,Chennai has,as we like to call it,a hot-hotter-hottest kind of weather,believe me, you do not wanna bask in the summer sun here,if you don’t like warm climates,let alone boiling. February is quite a hot month due to that,and the summer heat can sometimes be felt even as early as the 2nd week of this month!

Haiku:
Ripe raspberries,grapes,
Plump pomegranates savored,
I await summer.

This haiku talks about the fruits that are sought after,as the month of February passes. But I’m awaiting March!

About the author:
I’m just a fifteen year old writer and science freak trying to learn the art of writing poetry,and expanding my horizons!

Fruits in February(seasonal):
In India,January marks the harvest festivals,and fruits such as apples,pears,dry fruits(figs,plums,raisins,dates etc.) are sought after.As February arrives, fruits such as pomegranates and raspberries,as mentioned above,along with strawberries,oranges,blueberries,green and black grapes fill up markets. As March approaches,people start wondering when the mango trees will yield juicy fruits!

  1. just one year younger than my third daughter….fabulous! Oh you can really, reallyy write, with colours, and tone, and you have that extra ingrediant…dedication, and the long-term view….I think that is great. One of my very best friends comes from Chennai, and another good friend comes from Kerala, and the ways they critisise each other’s states is just so funny! I really enjoyed your post very much, was really enriching, with your haiku bursting with flavours…

  2. Veera, your top image makes me hungry. The wide array of fruit choices is mind-boggling! I like learning about the variation in the temperatures in the seasons. Being near water is always a blessing. I remember going to Texas years ago and thinking the heat was boiling. What do you do to stay cool in those times? I’m happy to learn you are a teenager; it is a surprise because you write so well. I very much enjoyed learning via your ko.

    1. ❀ Here,we have watermelons,apples,and grapes to keep our bodies hydrated and cool,that's partly why they're so in demand at this time of the year. In the summer season,its always mangoes and watermelons,nothing else! I'm so glad you liked my post πŸ™‚ ❀
