“Boys in a pasture”- Winslow Homer
A set of wayras:
Amidst grasslands lie-
Imprisoned by childhood joys-
Two young ‘uns free to admire
Boundless stretches of blue
Without worries nor worldly woes.
“Look beyond!” cries one,
“The horizon’s crimson hue!”
Grass sways to gentle breeze’s tune,
The woods watch in silence,
Awaiting dusk, as moon ascends.
Amidst grasslands lie
Immune to illness of angst,
Two young ‘uns eyeing the skies,
Blind to bespoken banes
Still dormant seeds yet to grow.
Amidst adulthood,
They recall merry laughter
They shared, watching cows grazing
In grasslands- such pure bliss
‘Mid the melancholy of life.

This has also been penned in response to the DVerse prompt, where poets were asked to pen poems based on the theme “laughter”. You can access the prompt at https://dversepoets.com/2024/09/03/poetics-just-for-laughs/

Oh to be young again! Love the painting and the poem.

I enjoyed this: the idiosyncrasy of the writing: I’m attracted to things strange, esp in the arts; still not sure what ‘wayras’ are as a form of writing?

Well yeah wayras are five line poems, with the syllable limit 5-7-7-6-8, and all lines should be unrhymed..

Google didn’t recognize it; what’s its derivation? I wonder how much different your poem would have been if it were free verse?? Does a ‘wayra’ make it a better poem? I am seriously curious .

I actually composed the poem with the intention of penning wayras, so I wrote in adherence to the syllable limits. I think if I wanted to write it in freeverse, I would have composed something different, but I cannot say if it would be better or worse than a wayra, I certainly don’t think I can make that comparison.

So beautifully rendered. I especially love the alliteration of…”Boundless stretches of blue / Without worries nor worldly woes.“

A wayras is new to me! I think I must try one sometime 🙂
You capture so beautifully the innocence of an idyllic country childhood — and then push it forward to adulthood, reminiscing “‘Mid the melancholy of life”
Beautiful poem.

I hope many of us remember the laughter of childhood companionship as a foil to mid life melancholy. I hope you poem serves as a reminder to rediscover that laughter later in life.

I really loved the light and carefree spirit of the boys and how it leads to their remembrance of those boyhood days.
